United States Navy Reserve, 1988-2005. Member of the Maryland state senate, 1999-2011, minority whip. Unsuccessful candidate for election to the One Hundred Eleventh Congress in 2008. Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Twelfth and to the seven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 2011-present).
