Member of the Maine state senate, 1992-2000, majority leader, 1996-2000. Unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate in 2002. Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Eleventh and to the eight succeeding Congresses (January 3, 2009-present).
