S. , Hastings College, Hastings, Nebr. , 1959. M. A. , University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebr. , 1963. Ph. D. , University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebr. , 1965. Nebraska Army National Guard, 1960-1966. Head football coach, University of Nebraska, 1972-1997. Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Seventh and to the two succeeding Congresses (January 3, 2001-January 3, 2007). Not a candidate for reelection, but was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor of Nebraska in 2006.
