Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Ninth Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative Randall (Duke) Cunningham and reelected to the three succeeding Congresses (June 6, 2006-January 3, 2013). Unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress in 2012.
