A. , Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N. C. , 1963. J. D. , Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N. C. , 1966. Member of the North Carolina state house of representatives, 1967-1973. Member of the North Carolina state senate, 1973-1975. Unsuccessful candidate for election to the One Hundred First Congress in 1988. Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Second and to the seven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1991-January 3, 2007). Unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Tenth Congress in 2006.
