Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Fifth Congress. Became a Member of the One Hundred Fourth Congress under the provisions of Kansas State Law (K. S. A. 25-3503[d]) on November 27, 1996, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative Sam Brownback. Reelected to the One Hundred Sixth Congress and to the three succeeding Congress (November 27, 1996-January 3, 2007). Unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Tenth Congress in 2006. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald J. Trump, 2020.
