Chairman of the Democratic National Committee 2009-2011. Elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 2012 for the term commencing January 3, 2013. Reelected in 2018 and again in 2024 for the term ending January 3, 2031. Unsuccessful candidate for vice president on the Democratic ticket with Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2016.
