Member of the Hawaii state house of representatives, 1998-2006. CEO, Helping Hands Hawaii, 2002-2010. Chairman, Democratic Party of Hawaii, 2008-2011. Hawaii lieutenant governor, 2010-2012. Appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate on December 26, 2012, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Daniel Inouye, and took the oath of office on December 27, 2012. Subsequently elected in 2014 in a special election. Reelected in 2016, and again in 2022 for the term ending January 3, 2029. Chair, Committee on Indian Affairs (One Hundred Seventeenth and One Hundred Eighteenth Congresses).
