A Representative from South Dakota. Born in Chicago, Cook County, Ill. , September 13, 1939. B. S. , University of South Dakota, Vermillion, S. Dak. , 1964. LL. B. , University of South Dakota, Vermillion, S. Dak. , 1966. United States Marine Corps, 1955-1959. South Dakota state attorney general, 1974-1978. Governor of South Dakota, 1979-1987, 1994-2002. Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Eighth Congress and served until resignation on January 20, 2004 (January 3, 2003-January 20, 2004). Died on January 12, 2012, in Sioux Falls, S. Dak. Interment at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, S. Dak.
