D. , University of Mississippi Law School, 1983. Assistant public defender, 1983-1986. Assistant prosecuting attorney, Cape Girardeau, Mo. , 1986-1989. Assistant attorney general, Office of the Missouri state attorney general, 1989-1996. Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Fifth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1997-January 3, 2009). Not a candidate for reelection, but was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Missouri in 2008.
