General surgery training, University of Colorado Medical Center, Denver, Colo. , and Oregon Health Science Center, Portland, Oreg. , 1976-1982. Plastic surgery training, Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, Mass. , 1982-1984. Surgeon. United States Army Reserve, 1986-2001. Farm manager. Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Fourth and to the three succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1995-January 3, 2003). Not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Eighth Congress in 2002, but was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate. Is a resident of Des Moines, Iowa.
