District attorney of Madison County, Ala. , 1981-1990. Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Second and to the eight succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1991-January 3, 2009). Was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Eleventh Congress in 2008.
