Lawyer, private practice. Unsuccessful candidate to the Wisconsin state assembly in 1982. Member of the Wisconsin state assembly, 1984-1989. Member of the Wisconsin state senate, 1989-1993. Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Third and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1993-January 3, 2003). Not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Eighth Congress in 2002, but was an unsuccessful nominee for Governor of Wisconsin. Mayor of Milwaukee, Wis. , 2004-2021.
