A Representative from North Carolina. Born in Rocky Mount, Nash County, N. C. , March 15, 1926. Attended public schools in Nashville, N. C. A. B. , The Citadel, Charleston, S. C. , 1948. LL. B. , University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N. C. , 1952. United States Air Force, 1944-1946. Admitted to the North Carolina bar, 1952 and commenced practice in Nashville. Member of North Carolina house of representatives, 1955-1960. Chairman, North Carolina Democratic executive committee, 1966-1968. Delegate, Democratic National Convention, 1968. Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1983-January 3, 1995). Not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Fourth Congress in 1994. Died on November 10, 2015, in Nashville, N. C. Interment at Forest Hills Cemetery, Nashville, N. C.
