Biography
A Representative from Illinois. Born in Herald, White County, Ill. , October 30, 1945. Attended Herald Elementary School, 1950-1958. Graduated from Carmi Township High School, 1962. Served in the United States Army, Specialist 5, 1962-1965. B. S. , University of Southern Illinois, 1970, M. S. , 1974, Ph. D. , administration of higher education, 1984. Teacher and sports coach, Galatia and Thompsonville High Schools, 1970-1974. Assistant director, Southern Illinois Regional Education Service Center, and director, Area Service Center for Educators of the Gifted, 1974-1984. Illinois state senator, 1984-1988. Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred First and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1989-January 3, 1999). Was not a candidate in 1998 for reelection to the U. S. House of Representatives but was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Illinois.
