Lawyer, private practice. United States Navy, 1944-1946. Member of the Ojai City, Calif. , Council, 1958. Mayor of Ojai, Calif. , 1958-1961. Member of the California state senate, by special election, 1961-1974. Delegate, California state Republican conventions, 1961-1974. Delegate, Republican National Convention, 1968 and 1984. Elected as a Republican to the Ninety-third Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative Charles M. Teague, and reelected to the nine succeeding Congresses (March 5, 1974-January 3, 1993). Unsuccessful candidate for renomination to the One Hundred Third Congress in 1992. Died on February 7, 2021, in Ojai, Calif. Interment at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura, Calif.
