Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Sixteenth and to the two succeeding Congresses, until his resignation on December 8, 2024 (January 3, 2019-December 8, 2024). Was not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives, but was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 2024 for the term ending January 3, 2031. Subsequently appointed on December 8, 2024, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of appointed senator George Helmy for the term ending January 3, 2025. Took the oath of office on Dec 9, 2024.
