Treasurer of Bartholomew County Young Democrats, 1960-1963, and president, 1963-1964. Elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-ninth and to the sixteen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1965-January 3, 1999). Chairman, Select Committee on Intelligence (Ninety-ninth Congress), Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran (One Hundredth Congress), Joint Economic Committee (One Hundred First Congress). Committee on Foreign Affairs (One Hundred Third Congress). Was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Sixth Congress in 1998. Vice chair, National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, 2002-2004. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama, 2015.
