A Senator from Utah. Born in Richfield, Sevier County, Utah, October 12, 1932. Attended Salt Lake City public schools. Graduated, University of Utah 1955. Pursued graduate work at the University of Utah 1955-1956. Served as pilot in the United States navy 1956-1960. Utah Air National Guard 1963-1979, retiring as Brigadier General. Engaged in the insurance business 1961-1968. Salt Lake City commissioner 1968-1972. Mayor of Salt Lake City 1971-1974. President, Utah League of Cities and Towns 1972. First vice president, National League of Cities 1974. Elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in November 1974, for the term commencing January 3, 1975. Subsequently appointed by the Governor, December 21, 1974, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Wallace F. Bennett for the term ending January 3, 1975. Reelected in 1980 and again in 1986 and served from December 21, 1974, to January 3, 1993. Not a candidate for reelection in 1992. Chairman, Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs (Ninety-seventh through Ninety-ninth Congresses). Payload specialist aboard the space shuttle Discovery 1985. Is a resident of Salt Lake City, Utah.
