Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Third Congress (January 3, 1993-January 3, 1995). Unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Fourth Congress. Unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States Senate in 1996. Member of the Virginia state senate, 2000-2003. Unsuccessful candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, 2005.
