Expresses the sense of the Senate: (1) welcoming the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to the United States for the second ASEAN-United States summit meeting; (2) that the decision to host the summit in New York City reflects ASEAN's importance to the United States and the importance of the United States to ASEAN; (3) that the U.S. government should continue to broaden its economic, political-security, social, and cultural engagement with the countries in Southeast Asia toward a closer partnership with ASEAN, as well as with other Asia-Pacific regional institutions; (4) that the U.S. government is committed to working with all ASEAN member-states to encourage the development of democratic institutions in Burma; and (5) that a stronger ASEAN serves shared interests in regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
