Summary

ON MARCH 5, 2026, THE SENATE ADOPTED AMENDMENT #1 AND PASSED SENATE BILL 1591, AS AMENDED. AMENDMENT #1 rewrites the bill to, instead, impose court costs of up to 50% of the standard court costs charged by the court for a case involving a traffic violation, as well as state and local litigation taxes, on a person who uses a wireless communicat ions device or stand-alone electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. Present law caps the court costs for such an offense at $10, and provides that state and local litigation taxes are not applicable.
