A Representative from Oregon. Born in Brookings, Brookings County, S. Dak. , August 8, 1927. Attended public schools in Des Moines, Iowa. Moved to Eugene, Oreg. , 1947. B. S. , University of Oregon, Eugene, 1952. Served in the United States Navy, 1945-1946. Worked as publisher's representative, 1954-1958. Was staff director for Oregon Legislative Interim Committee on Agriculture, 1959-1960. Became a builder and developer of office and apartment building complexes in Oregon, 1960. Delegate, Democratic National Conventions, 1960, 1964. Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fourth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1975-January 3, 1987). Was not a candidate for reelection in 1986. Was the Democratic nominee for the U. S. Senate in 1986 but withdrew his candidacy. Author. Died on October 6, 2020, in Eugene, Oreg.
