A Representative from North Carolina. Born in Vader, Lewis County, Wash. , January 31, 1910. Graduated from Asheville-Biltmore College, Asheville, N. C. , 1929. Graduated from Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn. , 1931. J. D. , Asheville University Law School, Asheville, N. C. , 1936. Lawyer, private practice. United States Navy, 1943-1946. Member of the North Carolina general assembly, 1947-1949 and 1951-1953. Elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-sixth Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States Representative David M. Hall, and reelected to the eight succeeding Congresses (June 25, 1960-January 3, 1977). Was not a candidate for reelection to the Ninety-fifth Congress in 1976. Died on November 28, 1995, in Black Mountain, N. C. Interment in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Black Mountain, N. C.
