Elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Fifth Congress (January 3, 1997-January 3, 1999). Was not a candidate for reelection in 1998 to the One Hundred Sixth Congress. Chairman, Committee on Agriculture (One Hundred Fifth Congress). Died on September 21, 2020, in Medford, Oreg.
