B. , Princeton University, Princeton, N. J. , 1941. L. L. B. , Harvard Law School, Cambridge, Mass. , 1949. United States Navy, 1941-1946. City judge, 1953-1954. North Carolina state superior court judge, 1956-1961. United States District Court Judge, 1961-1963. Unsuccessful candidate for Governor of North Carolina in 1964. Senior vice president, trust officer, city executive of North Carolina National Bank, Greensboro, N. C. , 1964-1966. Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-first and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1969-January 3, 1981). Chairman, Select Committee on Ethics (Ninety-fifth Congress). Unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Ninety-seventh Congress in 1980. Was a resident of Greensboro, N. C. Until his death on April 3, 2001, in Greensboro, N. C. Interment in Green Hill Cemetery, Greensboro, N. C.
