Elected to Washington State house of representatives, 1956, reelected in 1958. Elected to Washington State senate in 1960, reelected in 1964 and 1968. Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-second and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1971-January 3, 1981). Unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1980 to the Ninety-seventh Congress.
