Biography
A Representative from New York. Born in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, N. Y. , February 4, 1939. Graduated from Jamestown High School, Jamestown, N. Y. , 1957. A. B. , Duke University, Durham, N. C. , 1961. LL. B. , New York University School of Law, 1964. Admitted to the New York bar in 1965 and commenced practice in Jamestown. Mayor, Jamestown, 1969-1976. Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fourth Congress, by special election, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative James F. Hastings, and reelected to the five succeeding Congresses (March 2, 1976-January 3, 1987). Was not a candidate for reelection in 1986, but was elected lieutenant governor of New York. Reelected in 1990 for the four-year term beginning January 1, 1991. Unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor of New York in 1994. Is a resident of Asheville, N. Y.
