Chief fiscal analyst and staff director, Washington state senate ways and means committee, 1969-1973. Governmental affairs director, Puget Sound Group Health Cooperative, 1974-1975. Member, King County, Wash. Council, 1975-1978. Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-sixth and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1979-January 3, 1989). Unsuccessful candidate in 1983 for the United States Senate in a special election to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Henry M. Jackson. Was not a candidate for reelection in 1988 to the United States House of Representatives, but was an unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate. Elected governor of Washington in 1992 for the four-year term beginning January 13, 1993. Unsuccessful candidate for election for Wash. State commissioner of public lands in 2000. Died on May 1, 2017, in Olympia, Wash. Interment at Bethel Cemetery, Steptoe, Wash.
