United States Army Reserve, 1958-1962 (active duty, 1958). Professional football player, 1957-1970. Special assistant to the Governor of California, 1967. Staff, Republican National Committee, 1969. Elected as a Republican to the Ninety-second and to the eight succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1971-January 3, 1989). Was not a candidate for renomination to the One Hundred First Congress in 1988. Unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 1988. United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, 1989-1993. Unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States in 1996. Died on May 2, 2009, in Bethesda, Md. Awarded posthumously the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama, 2009.
