Attended the College of Charleston, 1960-1961. United States Air Force Reserve, 1963-1969. South Carolina Air National Guard, 1981-1987. President, Hartnett Realty Co. , 1987 to 2015. Member of the South Carolina state house of representatives, 1965-1973. Member of the South Carolina state senate, 1973-1981. Delegate, South Carolina State Republican conventions, 1972-1980. Delegate, Republican National Conventions, 1980-2000. Elected as a Republican to the Ninety-seventh and to the two succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1981-January 3, 1987). Was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundredth Congress in 1986, but was an unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor of South Carolina. Unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate in 1992. Is a resident of Mount Pleasant, S. C.
