Biography
A Senator from New Hampshire. Born in Brookfield, Worcester County, Mass. , March 29, 1936. Attended public schools. Graduated from Holy Cross College, Worcester, 1959 and Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, D. C. , 1965. Served in the United States Navy 1959-1961. Admitted to New Hampshire and Massachusetts bars in 1966 and commenced practice in Concord, N. H. Served in office of New Hampshire attorney general 1966-1968. New Hampshire assistant attorney general 1967-1968. New Hampshire insurance commissioner 1968-1973. Was a candidate for election in 1974 to the United States Senate for the six-year term commencing January 3, 1975. Due to the contested election, the Senate declared the seat vacant as of August 8, 1975. Elected as a Democrat, by special election, September 16, 1975, to fill the vacancy, and served from September 18, 1975, until his resignation December 29, 1980. Unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1980 and 1990. Resumed the practice of law in New Hampshire. Was a resident of Manchester, N. H. , until his death on October 16, 2012. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
