A Representative from Texas. Born in Joplin, Jasper County, Mo. , July 27, 1915. Moved with his parents to Houston, Tex. , in 1930 and graduated from San Jacinto High School. Student at the University of Houston, also the South Texas School of Law 1934-1940. Was admitted to the Texas bar in 1940 and commenced the practice of law in Alvin, Tex. Served as city attorney of Alvin, Tex. , in 1942 and 1943. Member of the school board. In 1943 returned to Houston as an assistant district attorney in Harris County in charge of the civil department. In 1948 was elected to the State house of representatives and served in the regular and special sessions of the fifty-first legislature. Elected county judge of Harris County in 1950, 1952, and again in 1954 for a four-year term. Member of board of regents of the South Texas College of Law, board of directors of the Speech and Hearing Center, and director of the South Texas Law Journal, Inc. Elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-sixth and to the eight succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1959, until his resignation January 22, 1976, to become a Commissioner on the Federal Maritime Commission. Was a resident of Houston, Tex. Died in Houston April 17, 1986. Interment Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston, Tex.
