A Senator from Nevada. Born in Lovelock, Pershing County, Nev. , November 20, 1909. Graduated from the University of Nevada at Reno in 1930 and from Georgetown University Law School, Washington, D. C. , in 1934. Admitted to the Nevada bar in 1935 and commenced the practice of law in Reno, Nev. District attorney of Storey County 1935-1938. Appointed deputy attorney general of Nevada in 1938. State attorney 1942-1950. Resumed private practice of law. Elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, November 2, 1954, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Patrick A. McCarran for the term ending January 3, 1957. Reelected in 1956, 1962, and again in 1968 and served from December 2, 1954, until his resignation December 17, 1974. Was not a candidate for reelection in 1974. Chairman, Committee on District of Columbia (Eighty-fifth through Ninetieth Congresses), Joint Committee on Washington Metropolitan Problems (Eighty-fifth and Eighty-sixth Congresses), Select Committee on Small Business (Ninety-first through Ninety-third Congresses). Resumed the practice of law. Died in Auburn, Ca. , September 12, 1988. Interment in Masonic Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Reno, Nev.
