Biography
A Representative from Oregon. Born in Great Falls, Cascade County, Mont. , March 9, 1914. Attended the public schools in Snohomish, Wash. Graduated from Whitman College, Walla Walla, Wash. , in 1935. Taught in Port Angeles (Wash. ) High School 1935-1937. M. A. , Columbia University, New York City, 1939. Commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy in 1942, and served as communications officer in the South and Southwest Pacific until December 1945. Captain, United States Naval Reserve. Engaged in business in Baker, Oreg. Elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-fifth and to the eleven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1957-January 3, 1981). Chairman, Joint Committee on Budget Control (Ninety-second and Ninety-third Congresses), Committee on Budget (Ninety-third Congress), Committee on Ways and Means (Ninety-fourth through Ninety-sixth Congresses), Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation (Ninety-fourth Congress), Joint Committee on Taxation (Ninety-fifth and Ninety-sixth Congresses). Unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1980 to the Ninety-seventh Congress. Established a consulting firm in Washington, D. C. Was a resident of Falls Church, Va. , until his death in Bethesda, Md. , October 11, 1986. Interment at Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
