A Representative from South Carolina. Born near Greenwood, Greenwood County, S. C. , April 14, 1916. Attended the public schools. Engaged in agricultural pursuits. Served in the South Carolina state house of representatives 1939-1940. Member of the South Carolina state senate 1941-1942. Enlisted as a private in the Army Air Forces and served from June 20, 1942, until discharged as a corporal on October 12, 1945, nineteen months of which were in the European Theater. Elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress (January 3, 1947-January 3, 1949). Was not a candidate for renomination in 1948, but was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States Senator. Resumed agricultural pursuits. Elected to the Eighty-second Congress. Reelected to the eleven succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1951, until his resignation December 31, 1974. Chairman, Committee on Veterans' Affairs (Ninety-third Congress). Was not a candidate for reelection in 1974 to the Ninety-fourth Congress. Was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor. Chairman, South Carolina Democratic party, 1980-1984. Died on August 13, 2005, in Greenwood, S. C.
