Appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, criminal division 1978-1981. Served as Chief Counsel to the New Mexico Department of Health and Environment. Attorney General, State of New Mexico, 1990-1998. Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Sixth and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1999-January 3, 2009). Not a candidate for reelection to the House of Representatives but was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 2008. Reelected in 2014, and served from January 3, 2009, to January 3, 2021. Was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2020. U. S. Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, 2022-.
