Counsel to Vice President Walter Mondale 1978-1980. Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-eighth and to the six succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1983-January 2, 1997). Was not a candidate for reelection to the United States House of Representatives in 1996, but was elected to the United States Senate and served from January 3, 1997, to January 3, 2003. Renominated in 2002 but withdrew from the race on September 30, 2002. Chair, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (One Hundred Fourth Congress).
