Appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Al Franken, took the oath of office on January 3, 2018. Subsequently elected in a special election on November 6, 2018, for the remainder of the term. Reelected in 2020 for the term ending January 3, 2027.
