Elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in a special election on December 12, 2017, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jefferson Sessions, a seat subsequently held by appointed senator Luther Strange, and served from January 3, 2018 until January 3, 2021. Was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2020.
