D. , University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Calif. , 1991. Lawyer, private practice. Special counsel, United States Housing and Urban Development. Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Tenth Congress and to the succeeding Congress, and served from January 3, 2007, to January 26, 2009, when she resigned to become a U. S. Senator. Appointed January 23, 2009, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Hillary Clinton. Appointment took effect upon her resignation from the House of Representatives on January 26, 2009. Took the oath of office on January 27, 2009. Elected in 2010 in a special election for the term ending January 3, 2013. Reelected in 2012, 2018, and again in 2024 for the term ending January 3, 2031. Chair, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (2025-). Was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
