United States Army Air Corps, 1942-1945. Assistant attorney general, New York state attorney general, 1953-1955. Member of the New York state assembly, 1966-1972. Member, New York state southeastern water commission. Elected as a Republican to the Ninety-third and to the fourteen succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1973-January 3, 2003). Chair, Committee on International Relations (One Hundred Fourth through One Hundred Sixth Congresses). Not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Eighth Congress in 2002. Delegate, Republican National Convention, 1996 and 2000. Died on December 17, 2016, in Wappingers Falls, N. Y. Interment at West Point Post Cemetery, West Point, N. Y.
