Member of the New York state assembly, 1996-2010. Member of the New York state senate, 2010-2016. Unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress in 2012. Unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the One Hundred Fourteenth Congress in 2014. Elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred Fifteenth and to the four succeeding Congresses (January 3, 2017-present).
