Daniel Coats

A Senator and a Representative from Indiana. Born in Jackson, Jackson County, Mich. , May 16, 1943. Attended the public schools. Graduated Jackson High School, 1961. Graduated Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill. , B. A. , 1965. Graduated Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis, J. D. , 1971. Admitted to the Indiana bar in 1972 and commenced practice in Fort Wayne. Served in the United States Army 1966-1968. District representative, United States Congressman J. Danforth Quayle 1976-1980. Elected as a Republican to the Ninety-seventh and to the three succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1981-January 3, 1989). Elected to the One Hundred First Congress but did not serve. Appointed on December 27, 1988, effective January 3, 1989, to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the election of J. Danforth Quayle as Vice President. Elected by special election in 1990 to the remainder of the term. Reelected for a full term in 1992, and served from January 3, 1989, to January 3, 1999. Was not a candidate for reelection in 1998. Special counsel, law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, MacPherson and Hand. U. S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany 2001-2005. Again elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 2010, and served from January 3, 2011, to January 3, 2017. Chair, Joint Economic Committee (One Hundred Fourteenth Congress). Was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2016. Director of National Intelligence in the Cabinet of President Donald Trump, 2017-2019.
