Took the oath of office on January 22, 2009. Elected as a Democrat to the U. S. Senate in 2010. Reelected in 2016, and again in 2022 for the term ending January 3, 2029. Chair, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (2013-2014). Was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
