A. , Chapman College, Orange, Calif. , 1972. United States Air Force, 1968-1972. Member of the Michigan state house of representatives, 1973-1977. Delegate to the Michigan state Democratic conventions, 1972-1977. Elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-fifth and to the twelve succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1977-January 3, 2003). Majority whip (One Hundred Second and One Hundred Third Congresses). Minority whip (One Hundred Fourth through One Hundred Seventh Congresses). Not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Eighth Congress in 2002, but was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination for Governor of Michigan.
