A Senator from Missouri. Born in St. Louis, Mo. , March 6, 1939. Attended the public schools. Graduated, Princeton University 1960. Graduated, University of Virginia Law School 1963. Practiced law in Washington, D. C. , and returned to Missouri in 1967. Assistant attorney general of Missouri 1969. State auditor 1970. Governor of Missouri 1973-1977, 1980-1985. Elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1986. Reelected in 1992, 1998 and 2004, and served from January 3, 1987, to January 3, 2011. Chair, Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship (One Hundred Fourth through One Hundred Sixth Congresses, One Hundred Seventh Congress [January 20, 2001-June 6, 2001]). Was not a candidate for reelection to the Senate in 2010. Resumed the practice of law. Was a resident of St. Louis, Mo. , until his death on May 13, 2025.
