How to Track a Bill

From the moment a bill is introduced, it begins a long, public journey through committees, votes, and amendments. Tracking that journey keeps citizens informed — and ensures accountability. LegiList makes it simple to follow any bill and return to it later from your personalized dashboard.

1. Finding a Bill
Every bill introduced in Congress is publicly available through Congress.gov and LegiList.
  • Search by bill number (e.g., H.R. 1234) or keyword.
  • Filter results by chamber, sponsor, or topic.
  • Each LegiList bill page includes a summary, sponsors, actions, and vote record.
Every piece of legislation — from small resolutions to landmark reforms — starts with a bill number.
2. Watching Its Progress
A bill’s journey includes several official status updates:
  • Introduced → Committee → Floor → Other Chamber → Presidential Action
  • Each stage includes dates and brief action summaries.
  • On LegiList, these are displayed chronologically in the “Actions” section of every bill page.
Following the actions list gives you a real-time picture of where the bill stands.
3. Monitoring Sponsors and Votes
Each bill page shows its primary sponsor and all cosponsors, along with any recorded votes.
  • Cosponsor data is synced daily from Congress.gov.
  • Vote tallies link directly to legislator profiles for context.
  • If a bill passes by voice vote, that action is still recorded in the “Actions” list.
Support and vote data are updated daily — straight from official sources.
4. Pinning Bills on LegiList
On every bill page, you’ll see a pin icon in the top-right corner — grey when inactive, red and tilted when pinned.
  • Click it to save that bill to your personal dashboard.
  • Pinned bills appear under the “Pinned Bills” section of your Dashboard.
  • Each entry links back to the live bill page for quick access and updates.
Think of it as your own congressional watchlist — bills you care about, all in one place.
5. Why Tracking Matters
Tracking bills gives you a front-row seat to how ideas become law — and how your representatives vote along the way.
Active citizens make accountable lawmakers. LegiList was built to make that easier.
